Shopping in Goa

The currency of Goa is the Indian rupee. You can not buy rupees in England and you are not allowed to remove them from the country. You can exchange your currency at the airport, hotels, banks and private moneychangers. Master and visa cards can be used to withdraw cash at ATMs, and traveller's cheques are also easily exchanged. Saying all that US dollars and the English pound are currencies most widely and easily accepted. The rupee notes 100 and 500 are very similar so please becareful when accepting these in your change.

Bargaining with stallholders is something us Brits are not familiar with. But it is all part of shopping in Goa. The main souvenirs are brassware, terracotta, shells, crochet, bamboo, and papier-mâché items. There are two main markets, the first held in Mapusa on Fridays, and the second on Wednesdays at Anjuna Beach. The latter was started by and for the foreigners. Most deluxe hotels and resorts have there own in house shops but at higher prices.

Goa is famous for its Cashew nuts and many shops and stalls are dedicated to these nuts of varying types and tastes.

With the influx of foreign residents and holiday maker's new shops of fashion and styling are on the increase with reasonable prices.
