Short History of Goa

The Hindu dynasties ruled Goa prehistorically and historically, up to the eventual take over by the Portuguese who took control led by General Alfonso de Albuquerque. This Portuguese rule lasted four centuries.

Goa became famous around 1510, with silk, spices, porcelain, and pearls been traded out of Goa's harbours, which rivalled Lisbon the Portuguese capital as a trading port. The Portuguese, British, and the Dutch fought many battles over Goa, and at the same time battled with the Hindu and Muslim attacks from within India.

When India became free in 1947 the British left but the Portuguese regarded Goa as part of their territory and refused to leave. Goa was eventually liberated in December 1961 by the Indian army changing from dictatorship to democratic rule. An opinion poll was conducted in 1967 and the victory preserved the separate entity of Goa. In May 1987, Goa became the 25th state of the Indian Union.
