A Few of the Famous Churches of GoaThe Goan people respect the different religions of the community and have been living harmoniously together for many, many years. They have mutual respect for one another and for the religious celebrations and festivals of all religions. As a result of this there are many Churches and Temples to visit in Goa, here are some of them. The Church of Mae de Deus The Statue of Mae de Deus (mother of God) was brought from the ruins of the convent at Old Goa and a shrine has been built at this beautiful gothic style Church. The Church is at Saligao, amidst picturesque surroundings, 13km from Panaji, and its whitewashed walls are illuminated beautifully at night. The Church of St. Ana This Church at Talaulim was built in 1695 and contains hollow walls to allow people to walk in secret to confession. It is built on the banks of the river Siridao 11km from Panaji and is a true piece of Christian architecture. Basilica of Born Jesus The remains of St. Francis Xavier the Patron Saint of Goa are to be found here in a silver casket behind a Tomb, which was carved by Giovanni Batista and took 10 years to complete. The Holy Relics of the saint are displayed every 10 years during the anniversary of the Saint's death. This church was built in the 16th century and has become a World Heritage Monument. It is situated approx 9km from Panaji and the floor of the Church has Marble flooring inlaid with precious stones. Se Cathedral This Church is dedicated to St. Catherine and it was on her Feast Day 25th November 1510 that Alfonso de Albuquerque conquered Goa. Believers are awe-struck to hear of the Cross of Miracles, which is placed in the Cathedral, its earlier Church having been destroyed. People have had a vision of Christ on this cross and the rock on which it was found was said to spout water, while today the cross is slowly growing. The Church has five bells one of which is the famous Golden bell. St. Cajetan The Italian monks of the Theatine Order built this domed Church on the lines of the Roman Basilica of St Peter. Its elegant, three-storeyed, west-facing facade has Corinthian columns and pilasters of gigantic proportions. The Church has a nave and two side aisles with a Baroque interior richly ornamented with glided Altars and rare paintings. Although we can never claim that our properties compare to Churches, there is definitely something very special about property Goa has to offer. |
